GOALS IN DISCIPLESHIP

When discipling, we want to keep the goals in mind. What are we striving for? What are we working towards? Let’s talk about it!

Ultimately, we want our disciple to grow in such a way that they are on the path to becoming who God created them to be. Also, to grow deep in their walk with Christ and then in turn, disciple others to do the same. Here are two goals we want to be mindful of when discipling.

#1. Spiritual Growth

There are three avenues that involve spiritual growth:

  1. Practicing spiritual disciplines

  2. Developing and using spiritual gifts

  3. Bearing spiritual fruit

Practicing and making a lasting habit of the spiritual disciplines will help a believer grow deep in their relationship with God. These disciplines involve the habit of Bible intake, prayer, fasting, serving, etc.

When we use our spiritual giftings, we are playing our part in edifying the church. The experiences we encounter when actively using them contributes to our spiritual growth. These giftings include teaching, serving, leadership, etc.

The fruit of the Spirit contains nine characteristics that every believer should strive towards bearing. This is found in Galatians 5:22-23:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

#2 Become a Discipler

Eventually, we want our disciple to disciple others and continue the cycle.

We should be training them with this goal in mind. We need to teach them the skills to effectively reach the lost and guide others toward spiritual maturity.

Though two goals don't seem much, there is SO much to work towards with each one. Don’t be overwhelmed and rush to work on each one at the same time. Take it day-by-day. Progress may be slow but it will surely be deep.
