YOUR ROLE IN DISCIPESHIP

Do you know what your role entails in this kind of relationship?  There are two roles in discipleship. The discipler’s role, and God’s role. The two of you will be working with each other in collaboration on this journey. Let’s go into more detail.

The Discipler’s Role

Some of your responsibilities as a discipler are:

1. To be prepared

Discipleship involves a lot of training, teaching, and planning. We must not go into a meeting and just wing it.

Be prepared! It’s important for each meeting to have an agenda.

You don’t want to go in unprepared and waste your and your disciple’s time. If you haven’t done so already, get your week-to-week guide for discipleship here!

2. To pray for your disciple.

Prayer is such a powerful weapon! We must always be praying for our disciple’s walk with the Lord and their spiritual growth.

3. To seek the Lord for personal and spiritual growth

I can’t express enough how important it is to be working on your own spiritual and personal growth, especially when you are investing in someone else.

You need to be strong in the Lord and be spiritual fed as you feed others. When you aren’t actively seeking the Lord, you can easily burn out because you aren’t seeking His guidance and strength for this discipleship journey.

You also need to lead by example. Share your struggles and victories with your disciple. That way, they know that you too haven’t ‘made it’ and are growing in your walk as well.

4.To be open to and cooperate with the Holy Spirit

This is key. I know that you as a discipler will be the one executing the discipleship journey, but we must not forget who really is running the show.

God knows how exactly how this will play out and will orchestrate things for His glory. That being said, we as disciplers need to be open and cooperate with the Holy Spirit’s leading, even if it deviates from the set agenda.

Which brings me to what the discipler can count on God to do for this relationship.  We can’t do everything ourselves, we are only human.

You can expect the Holy Spirit to:

1.Guide the discipleship process

2.Create spiritual hunger in your disciple

3. Give you wisdom and discernment as a discipler.

It’s good to know your role and God’s role in the discipleship process. When you have a clear understanding of who does what, it puts you at ease knowing that you aren’t expected to do all these things.

Let God do what He does best and you do what you can do best by the power, strength, and wisdom He will give you.
